About Us

The beginnings of the Alky Pro tuning program go back quite a while.. to the late 1980’s,
when Greg Gower conceived what we believe was the first computer software ever
written specifically to analyse and tune Blown Alcohol fuel systems.
The pictures below are screen shots from the original software.

Crude by today’s standards, but effective at the time, in 1993 the software helped Greg tune his Oldsmobile Achieva Funny Car (driven by Allan Dobson) to run Australia’s first sub-6 second pass.. a 5.904 E.T., which stood as the fastest alcohol run outside North America at the time.

The Achieva held both ends of the Australian Top Alcohol Funny Car record and in 1993 Greg was voted Australia’s Crewchief/Tuner of the year, in the annual Rocket Industry Awards.

Since the mid 1990s, Greg has worked as a Tuner and Technical Consultant with a number of successful teams, and currently tunes the Craig Glassby TA/FC running out of Perth, Western Australia, with a best E.T. of 5.386.

Fast forward to 2013, and conversations with American Mechanical Engineer and racer – Patrick Hale, convinced Greg there was a more accurate way to tune these engines. Patrick has devised a method of tuning that compensates the weather correction calculations to take into account the tremendous cooling effect of methanol injected into the air entering the injector hat. This cooling effect changes the air density.

The ambient conditions measured in the pits are NOT the same as the air that enters the supercharger, and failing to account for this results in a less-than-perfect result. With the aid of Software Engineer Greg Leach (who also compiled the original software some 25 years ago), we have written a program incorporating the “Methanol Correction” method, along with some further refinements, which we believe will tune a Blown Alcohol engine more accurately and consistently than anything previously available.

Alky Pro accuracy and future development is backed by a sophisticated Fuel Injection Flow Bench – using multiple Macnaught oval gear flow-meters, an adjustable pressure chamber to simulate manifold boost, and RacePak data logging. We have spent hundreds of hours testing individual components – nozzles, jets, fittings and hoses, barrel valves, fuel pumps, etc as well as complete fuel systems for a variety of engine and blower combinations (Roots and Screw) in order to confirm the accuracy of Alky Pro software. We use pure methanol as the flow medium to ensure accuracy*.
